How inventory financing works

The basic trade is simple. A lending partner advances money to buy goods, takes a security interest in those goods, and gets paid back as the goods sell. What varies from partner to partner is the mechanics: how much of the inventory's value it will lend against, how often it wants updated stock figures, and whether repayment follows actual sales or a fixed calendar.

  1. You identify the purchase. A supplier order, a seasonal buy, or a standing level of stock you need to carry.
  2. The partner values the stock. Usually at cost rather than retail price, and often with lower value given to slow-moving or perishable items.
  3. Funds go to you or the supplier. Some partners pay the supplier directly.
  4. You report and repay. Periodic inventory reports or inspections, with payments as goods sell or on a schedule.

Collateral and UCC filings

Because the stock secures the funding, the partner will normally file a UCC financing statement, a public notice that it has a claim on your inventory. That filing is visible to any future lender who searches your business name, which is one reason to keep track of what you have pledged. The South Carolina UCC search guide explains how to look up the filings against your business, read them, and get a filing cleared once an obligation is paid.

Watch the description of collateral in the agreement. A filing limited to the financed inventory leaves other assets free for other lenders; a filing that covers all business assets does not.

Inventory financing, a line of credit or working capital?

Three ways to pay for stock

Line of creditVaries; sometimes receivables or inventoryFrequent, smaller restocksRenewal reviews and draw-period limits
Working capitalOften cash flow rather than specific goodsA one-time purchase that sells quicklyPayment frequency against your sales rhythm

Dealers that stock high-value units one at a time, such as equipment or recreational vehicle dealers, often use a specialised form called floor plan financing, in which each unit is financed separately and paid off when it sells. Floor plan financing explained covers how that differs from general inventory financing.

Sizing the purchase against sell-through

The cost of inventory financing grows with time on the shelf. Before asking for funding, estimate how long the goods will take to sell. If a holiday buy will be gone by January, there is little reason to carry financing well past that. If a slow-moving category sits for most of a year, the financing cost per unit sold can eat a surprising share of the margin.

The inventory financing cost calculator lets you test that with your own figures: the amount, the rate from an offer and the months you expect to carry the stock.

Retail and wholesale in Greenville County

Greenville County had 1,907 retail employer establishments in 2023 with 30,103 paid employees, and 753 wholesale employer establishments with 13,771 employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Another 3,816 retail businesses and 861 wholesale businesses operated with no paid employees in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024). Many of them buy stock in one season and sell it in another, which is the pattern inventory financing was designed for.

Those figures are county-wide. The Greenville, SC page looks at the downtown ZIP code, and funding by industry lines inventory financing up with the other sectors partners fund.

What partners usually review

  • Inventory records: what you carry, what it cost and how fast it turns.
  • Sales history, often through bank statements and point-of-sale or accounting reports.
  • Supplier quotes or purchase orders for the stock you plan to buy.
  • Existing liens on inventory or business assets, which partners find through a UCC search.
  • Credit history for the business and, frequently, its owners.
