Before you start: who we are
Kitehill Commercial Capital is a broker, not a lender, and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or paid by any organization listed here. We list them because owners often need them before, or instead of, a funding request. Details were checked against each organization's own website on 2026-10-15; confirm hours and services with them directly.
Free one-on-one advising
Greenville Area SBDC (Clemson Region). Part of the SC Small Business Development Centers network, which lists the Greenville office at Clemson University, 225 S. Pleasantburg Drive, Suite C-12, Greenville, SC 29607. SBDCs are funded in part by the SBA and offer free, confidential advising on business plans, financial statements and preparing for a loan. The network's locations page covers the other centres around the state.
Good for: a first business plan, reviewing your numbers before you borrow, understanding an offer you have received.
Federal lending programs
SBA South Carolina District Office. The SBA does not usually lend directly to businesses; it backs loans made by approved lenders. Its South Carolina district page lists an office serving Greenville among 20 Upstate and Midlands counties (accessed 2026-10-15) and points to lender and program information, as well as guidance on registering a business.
Good for: understanding SBA loan programs and finding participating lenders. Kitehill does not arrange SBA loans.
Economic development
Greenville Area Development Corporation. Greenville County's economic development organization, focused on business recruitment, expansion and the county's economic data. Owners planning a significant expansion or relocation may find its research useful.
Good for: larger expansion projects and county economic information.
Business networks
Greenville Chamber. Greenville's chamber of commerce, a private membership organization offering events, programs and advocacy for its members.
Good for: local connections, referrals and business events.
State registration offices
- South Carolina Secretary of State: entity filings for corporations, LLCs and partnerships, and UCC records.
- South Carolina Department of Revenue: state business tax accounts through MyDORWAY (verified 2026-10-15).
The South Carolina loan checklist explains where each fits before a funding request.
City and county government
The City of Greenville and Greenville County handle business licenses and local permits for their own areas. Which one applies depends on the address; the Greenville, SC license guide explains how to tell.
Grants
Kitehill does not offer or arrange grants. The SBDC and the SBA district office are the most reliable places to ask about legitimate grant programs, and any offer to secure a grant for an up-front payment deserves suspicion.
Which resource for which question
| Your question | Start with |
|---|---|
| Is my business plan realistic? Can I afford a loan? | Greenville Area SBDC |
| Which banks make SBA loans? Which programs exist? | SBA South Carolina District Office |
| How do I form an LLC or check an entity's status? | South Carolina Secretary of State |
| How do I register for state taxes? | South Carolina Department of Revenue (MyDORWAY) |
| Do I need a city or county license? | City of Greenville or Greenville County, depending on the address |
| We are planning a major expansion in the county. | Greenville Area Development Corporation |
| Who else does business locally? | Greenville Chamber |
Before an SBDC meeting, bring the last year of business bank statements, any tax returns, a short description of what you want to do and the questions you most want answered. Advisers can do far more with real numbers than with a general description.
What these organizations do not do
- The SBDC does not lend. It advises, and it can help you prepare for a lender, but the money comes from elsewhere.
- The SBA rarely lends directly. Its loan programs run through approved banks and lenders.
- The chamber is not a government office. It cannot issue licenses or registrations.
- Economic development organizations focus on larger projects. A small business with a routine funding need is usually better served by the SBDC first.
Knowing this saves calls: an owner looking for a loan, a license or a plan review can go straight to the right door.
When you are ready to talk about funding
The funding types comparison and term loans are good starting points, and the Greenville, SC page has local data. More guides are in the resources section.
